LITTLE ROCKS

Welcome to Little-Rock curling at EYCC. We hope to build on last year's successes to increase the curlers' enjoyment and curling skills. Our overall goal is to have fun and learn some curling at the same time.
Curlers must be 6 years of age by October 1, 2011 and must bring/wear a helmet in order to participate in the little-rock program.

What To Wear

Here are a few tips to ensure you enjoy your time on the ice.

Wear a Helmet! A Helmet will help protect you if you fall. Note that a helmet is mandatory for Little Rockers.

Layer Up! During the lessons you may be standing around for a few minutes watching the instructors and feel cool. When you start to curl, you’ll warm up again. Wear a light jacket or fleece that you can take on and off as you need to.

Wear Loose Pants! You need to be able to stretch easily. Jeans can be too restrictive.

Bring Gloves! If you’re worried your hands may get cold, bring a pair of gloves or mittens just in case.

What To Bring

Make sure you bring some clean running shoes with you that will grip the ice. Clean Shoes! Our Ice Technicians spend many hours making perfectly flat, perfectly clean ice. You will need to bring some clean shoes (running shoes or tennis shoes are ideal). You won’t be able to go on the ice in the same shoes you arrived in.

That’s it! The great thing about curling is that you don’t need anyspecial equipment to get started. We’ll lend you one of our club brooms and make sure you’re looked after during your learn to curl session.

Ontario Skill Awards

We will continue with the Ontario Skill Awards Program. The program is designed to encourage young people to curl and to provide an opportunity to attain proficiency in the required skills on an individual basis.

The program has six levels, including Mini-Rockers, Red, Blue, Bronze, Silver and Gold. As the curlers achieve the knowledge and skill required at each level, they will receive an appropriately coloured crest.

Bonspiels

Please check the Bonspiels link for information and dates of Bantam/Junior and Little Rocks bonspiels.

RULES

A stone that touches or crosses a sideline while in motion or comes to rest biting a sideline must be removed from play immediately.

No stone shall be measured by any physical device during an end for comparison, to determine if it is counting, or to determine if it is out of play, except for use of the 12" measuring stick to determine if those first 4 rocks thrown are in the free guard zone. If the two teams cannot agree whether a stone is in or out of play during an end, an umpire or neutral curler chosen by the Skips may make the decision by a visual ruling.

All measurements and scoring at the conclusion of an end shall be determined by the Vice-skip (all other curlers must remain outside the house). An umpire or neutral curler chosen by the Skips will resolve disputed points.

The players, other than the Skip and Vice-skip shall stand behind the house, but shall place themselves along the sides of the rink between the hog lines; except when about to deliver their own stones or sweeping a stone delivered by their team.

Behind the tee line, only one player from each team may sweep at any one time. This may be the Skip or Vice-skip of either team or the lead or second of the delivering team.

Behind the tee line, the players of the delivering team have first privilege of sweeping their own stone. If their choice is not to sweep, they shall not obstruct or prevent their opponent from sweeping their stone.

No player shall start to sweep an opponent's stone until it reaches the tee line.

No alcohol or glass containers are allowed in the ice shed or in the change rooms.

ETIQUETTE

Shoes must be cleaned before entering the ice shed. Proper footwear must be worn at all times.

Generally, if the last end has not commenced prior to 10 minutes to the second hour of play, the final end shall not be played.

In order to promote completion of full games, after the delivering team has released their rock, the opposing team player should be fully prepared in the hack (slider on, rock cleaned) to throw his/her rock upon the Skip taking control of the house.
