Home of the World Juniors Curling Championships
In 1967 a group of five men sitting in the lounge of the East York Curling Club in suburban Toronto in Canada is credited with the original idea that led to the birth of the World Junior Curling Championships. Willis Blair, David Prentice, Jack Manley, Bob Kennedy and Jimmy Brown exchanged their views on how junior men's curling could be improved in their region, and they decided to organize an invitational bonspiel.
The first year 1968 it was staged over two successive weekends, with the parents of EYCC and district curlers billeting the out-of-town teams. By 1970, the junior bonspiel had grown in popularity to the point where a sponsor was needed. Thorn Press, a local printer, was enlisted to provide the initial commercial support.
